Business Ethics and Virtue Ethics MOD 3 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Business Ethics and Virtue Ethics MOD 3 - Essay ExampleIf a individual is not courageous, for instance, he will not overcome the difficulties inherent in the practice of any virtue (Pury & Lopez, 2010). In simple words, it implies doing what one knows he has to do no question how demanding or complicated it might seem. Courage takes a number of forms. Examples incorporate the courage to stand for what is true, the courage deal with a personal apprehension, the courage to give up disrespect, the courage to tolerate physical or emotional hurt for self-development, the courage to move ahead through disappointment, and many more. Virtue of Honesty The virtue of justness is defined as the negation to false reality, that is, to pretend that facts are early(a) than they are (Roberts & Woods, 2010). According to Peikoff, honesty consists of taking the procedure of cognition sincerely, creating an active psyche, and looking for familiarity because one wants it to proceed appropriately rather than making an impression on others. Honesty is linked with the value it tries to achieve because such value should symbolize truth, it cannot be faked. From this perspective, virtues are depicted with respect to what is better for individuals Virtues are not their own incentive or a type of self-anguish, but a selfish indispensableness in the process of achieving values (Roberts & Woods, 2010). A virtue such as honesty is not only an inclination to do what is truthful, nor is it to be supportively identified as an advantageous or ethically important characters attribute. It is certainly a character attribute - that is, a disposition that is deep-rooted within its owner. An honest individuals motives as well as preferences, with respect to honest and dishonest behavior, reveal his views regarding honesty and genuineness - but naturally such views manifest themselves with regard to other behaviors and to emotional responses also. Virtue of Justice While speaking of justice as a virtue, one is usually indicating towards a quality of individuals, even if considering the justice of individuals as having some indication towards social justice. Plato treats justice as an overarching virtue (Sandel, 2010) of people as well as of societies, signifying that more or less all issues he would consider as ethical appeared under the perception of justice. However, in contemporary practices, justice includes just a part of individual integrity, and one does not right away imagine people as unjust if they lie. Plato knows individual justice on equivalence with justice writ large in the state (Sandel, 2010), however, he considers the state, or democracy, as a form of organism or beehive, and the justice of people is not thought of as mainly involving orthodoxy to just organizations as well as regulations. Instead, the just person is someone whose psyche is directed by a revelation of the Good, someone in whom rationale rules enthusiasm and aspiration through this rel egate of a vision. Such a formation of individual justice is virtue ethical since it connects justice (or behaving in a just manner) to an inner condition of the person instead of the loyalty to social standards or to good outcomes. Plato and Aristotle both were rationalists because they consider human understanding and ethical causes in addition, what they state

Law on Euthanasia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3500 words

Law on Euthanasia - Essay ExampleA common method of active euthanasia is the administering of barbiturates or sleeping pills. The banknote between passive and active euthanasia can be summed up as actually doing something to bring about the death of a patient or doing nothing to save the patients life. Predictably, euthanasia is the subject of much debate as it generates emotional consideration of moral and tender values making it difficult for adjudicate in the U.K. to formulate and adhere to a strict legal code. Each case has to be decided on its own merits. Each time kindly and moral issues have to be delicately balanced against the applicable law.In 1993, Lord Browne-Wilkinson in the House of Lords, explained that, The judges function in this area of the law should be to apply the commandments which society, through the democratic process, adopts, not to impose their standards on society. If Parliament fails to act, then judge-made law will of necessity through a gradual an d changeful process provide a legal answer to each new question as it arises. But in my judgment that is not the best panache to proceed.(Airedale N.H.S. Trust v Bland 1993)Lord Browne-Wilkinson went on to say, For these reasons, it seems to me imperative that the moral, social and legal issues raised by this case should be considered by Parliament. (Airedale NHS Trust v Bland 1993)Public opinion is sharply divided in cases of euthanasia. There are those opposed to any form of euthanasia on the grounds that it requires momentary judgments on the quality of the patients life. The opponents to euthanasia conclude that refusing to administer checkup treatment to a patient or actively discontinuing a patients medical treatment is morally wrong. On the other hand, those in favor of euthanasia argue that the patient is only suffering with no relief in sight, and therefore to keep the patient alive when he is for all intents and purposes, dead, is morally wrong. This is the moral an d social background that makes it difficult for courts to apply strict legal guidelines. The moral and social implications were considered in both Re A 2000 HRLR 721 and Airedale NHS Trust v Bland 1993 AC 789. In Blands case on appeal to the House of Lords, Lord Geoff said This is because the question is not whether it is in the best interests of the patient that he should die. The question is whether it is in the best interests of the patient that his life should be prolonged by the continuance of this form of medical treatment or care. (Airedale NHS Trust v Bland 1993 AC) By saying this, Lord Geoff dispensed with the moral issue and identified the applicable legal principle upon the issue of euthanasia rests. Is it in the patients best interests to that his life should b prolonged by continuing with the medical treatment. The court and the law is not concerned with social implications or moral values. The court and the law is only concerned with the patient himself. What is best f or him, as opposed to society will guide the court. To better assure this application of legal principles and the disposal of moral

The federalist Essay Example for Free

The federalist EssayIf there would dupe been no credible arguments against the proposed constitution then there would have been no need for the intense material of The Federalist. And, if there would have been no Federalist then understanding the Constitution would have been significantly reduced. The Constitution is a compendious manuscript which is not suitable for an argument or for an explanation. The Federalist makes us understand the minds of the creators. Madison commented that The Federalist offers the most authentic exposition of the text of the Federal Constitution, as unsounded by the Body which brisk and the authority which accepted it. The Federalist justifies why the authors found the Articles of Confederation unacceptable why they wanted to separate the powers of the political sympathiess branches why they split the national legislature into deuce different houses why they thought that a federal court for the final appeal was desirable and necessary why they banned titles of nobility why they said that a bill of rights was a needless addition, and why a lot of other permissions and prohibitions were written into the Constitution or excludes completely. As a contribution to the ratification debate, The Federalist is an extended exercise in exposition, explanation, and persuasion. As a work of political theory, then, The Federalist flies fairly close to the ground, rarely soaring into the stratosphere of philosophical abstraction. Articles of Confederation If the Articles of Confederation would not have failed then there would have been no Constitution and surely no Federalist Papers. After two centuries it is not easy to picture the hectic state of America in the post revolutionary era. There was so much going on.America win a war but still the eastern seaboard was susceptible to attackers. Then the economy was weighed down by numerous currencies and tariffs, the state governments were bankrupt, and the central government was only cent ral in name. Everything was hap hazard and nothing was going right. Since 1776 till 1787 America was an un visualiseled union of states which were ruled by the Articles of Confederation, which had a serious defect and that was the individual states had power and that power remained with them. The central government was just there to be called central. It could do nothing. It could neither increase revenues nor pass and ratify lawmaking necessary for independent states. To pass laws, nine votes out of long dozen states were necessary and an undisputed and agreed by all votes was essential to effect any introductory change in the Articles. Making a central government with such weakness was deliberate because the American colonists had angrily rejected the British crowns authority to control trade and collect taxes. The governmental body created under the Articles of Confederation was basically immobilized, and there was no executive or judicial branch as well. What is more, the thir teen states had distinct political and commercial concerns and therefore a brief duration of artificial harmony among these states proved to be unsuccessful in producing a nationalized identity. What is strike is that nine states had navies seven printed their own currency, and the majority had tariff and customs laws. Also, New York was charging duties on ships transporting firewood or farm produce to and from neighboring states such as, New jersey and Connecticut. When the soldiers mentioned that New Jersey is our country, they were endorsing the prevailing emotions of other states. The insolvent state governments also contributed largely to the political turmoil of the 1780s. Hamilton harshly attacked the Articles of Confederation when he stated in Federalist No. 9 that the states promoted little, jealous, clashing, tumultuous commonwealths, the wretched nurseries of unceasing discord. Madison when writing Federalist No. 10 had the insolvent states in mind as well because he po rtrays the requirement to secure the national councils against any danger from a rage for paper money, for an abolition of debts, for an equal division of property, or for any other illegitimate or wicked project. In a letter to Jefferson in France on October 24, 1787 Madison wrote, about the unstable state government contributed more to that uneasiness which produced the convention, and prepared the public mind for a general reform, than those which accrued to our national character and interest from the inadequacy of the confederation to its immediate objects.

Agrippina the Younger - Rome a symbol of strength Essay Example for Free

Agrippina the Younger Rome a sign of strength EssayRome a symbol of strength, empowerment and prosperity for many, leaving no doubt in modern historians thoughts that this utopia was one of the most prominent of the ancient seasons. One dynasty within this succession stands out, as being one of the most provocative and influential was the Julio-Claudian dynasty. This period was introduced with the instigation of the emperor butterfly Julio Augustus, known as one of the most appreciated emperors in Roman history. After Augustus came the rulers Tiberius, Gaius Germanicus (Caligula), Claudius and Nero. With every new ruler the amount of power and wealth in the city swelled, some even say that it was the golden grow of Roman literature and arts. Each of these power brokers bring one person in common, apart from purplish extravagance and notoriety, they all have felt the sting of Julia Agrippinas manipulative powers (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2013). When studying Agripp ina it is found that many of the sources do not retain a sympathetic view of the During the Julio-Claudian era Agrippina the younger only retained her power through the manipulation of her son, husband and peers.By doing this she do herself on the most powerful women in Rome. Growing up with the most loved general in Rome at that time, Agrippina was destined for greatness. In her teenage years the regrettable incident of her fathers passing occurred and the empire was left(a) to Tiberius, during this time she was betrothed to Domitius Ahenobarbus, which she eventually bore a child with called Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus. Most sources state that she was forced into this marriage by the emperor Tiberius, a fact that is hold by modern historian Donna Hurley when she states that Agrippinas union with Cn.Domitius Ahenobarbus was arranged by Tiberius. After this Hurley then goes on to state that it was practice for families of prominence in the popular opinion house to have the emperor arrange their marriages, which would explain why Agrippina was married at the tender age of thirteen. This period was probably one of the most moot in Agrippinas time as it instigated her impression that those in power were the ones with the most enchant.Ask any of the historians of the Julio Claudian era how Julia Agrippina was able to come to such overweening power, each will give you a different answer, but they all start with Agrippinas relationship with her brother. By honoring his sisters Gaius Germanicus Caligula was reprimanded and made an easy target. These honors gave the triad sisters unparalleled status, they included making them honorary vestal virgins, inclusion in the annual vows for the allegiance to the emperor and the emperors safety, inclusion of in the preamble to proposals submitted to the senate, being interpret on coins and many other. An account, now considered un analogously to be true, is mentioned by Suetonius in 1914 XXIV, He (Caligula) lived in habi tual incest with his sisters he is believed to have violated Drusilla when he was a belittled. The more realistic option is explored by Barrett, which states Caligula would have looked for affection from his three sisters it was doubtless this affection that led to stories of incest with all three sisters. This appeared as an opportunity for Agrippina to bull her way to becoming an influential power broker in that era.Agrippinas sister Drusilla was Caligulas favourite, and when he fell ill he immediately made her his heir, however this instigation was evaded as she died unexpectedly in AD 38, therefore Caligula reaped with grief deified his beloved sister making her the only woman to be deified in the Julio Claudian era. The controversy commenced when Agrippinas husband, Domitius, died and the two remaining sisters conspired against Caligula, whom at the time was growing quite timeworn. This conspiracy was set about so the family could withhold its power and influence in the repu blic.Again, as before with Caligula the sisters were thought to have been involved in sexual relations with their brother-in-law, Marcus Lepidus, who according to Peter Roberts (2013, 165) was made heir in drift of Drusilla. Putting his faith in the wrong man, Caligula eventually discovered a plot gear up believed by his much loved siblings and his beloved heir to get liberate of him so as to make Lepidus the new emperor, whilst repaying the loyalty of Agrippina and her sister by allowing them to keep their status as when Caligula reigned.Due to the emperors sensitivity to conspiracies, the emperor eventually took heed of their plan and sentenced Lepidus to be put to death whilst sending Agrippina and her sister into exile to the Pontian Islands. The idea that Agrippina was grasping for power even then is back up by the modern historian, Leadbetter, in his novel The Ambition of Agrippina the Younger when he writes Agrippina and Lepidus had formed a conspiracy to replace Caligula Thus Agrippinas initial attempt at seizing power long predated her marriage to Claudius.Caligulas growing greed was becoming a worry to the senate, and although they disapproved of him they offered him compassion so as to gain his trust. Eventually the Praetorian Guard was sent to dispose of him (Roberts. P, 2008). Claudius, Agrippinas uncle, is mostly known for his eventual insanity, however many do not esteem his extreme kindness to those whose faith had been entrusted unto him. When he assumed power his first course of action was to reinstate his two nieces back into the Roman community. His wife, named Messalina, assumed the alike(p) practice as Agrippina, and protected her own interests by divorcing her sick and time spent husband and joined C. Silius, next years appointed consul, in marriage. This, like Agrippina was executed to ensure her financial and social safety. This resembles the aforementioned conspiracy between the two sisters and Lepidus. Agrippina identifying thi s approach shamelessly begins to flirt with her uncle and plants the thought of Messalinas betrayal in his mind. It was not long after this that the Praetorian Guard was sent to dispose of her.Due to Agrippinas obvious flattery towards the withered emperor did not go unnoticed and Claudius who was expected to wed again soon chose his niece as he new bride. This created some uncomfortable tension in the senate, which arranged all imperial marriages, since it was forbidden to marry your niece. This however was overlooked since Agrippinas father even then was still seen as an inspiration in the empire and would give the emperor favor of the people. The marriage also prevented Agrippina from marry another rival for the throne, thus eliminating any competition. After the two relatives were engaged a decree was passed to allow the conjugal union between uncle and niece, a fact which is enforced by Cassius Dio in his book Roman History when he states they the senators also passed a decree permitting Romans to wed their nieces, a union previously prohibited. Like Messalina, Claudius showed the utmost fascination towards his new wife and granted her many extravagances, some which were only reserved for Goddesses. The most arouse is the five- layered sardonyx which depicts Claudius, Agrippina and her parents. This would have displayed to the public that the marriage of the emperor and his niece has kept a pure blood line and therefore is the better option for emperor, it also confirms the affirmative relationship between the much loved warrior and the emperor. Another interesting privilege for Agrippina is the Sebasteion of Aphrodisias where a statue of her has been put in place. This was a temple created for the Gods and was put emplace for Augusts (Antiquity 2, 2008). This would create the image that Agrippina should be likened to the Gods and should be just as prominent in time as Augustus.Agrippina had such power of Claudius that she manipulated him to take in her son Domitius Ahenobarbus and make him heir to the throne. Claudius also changed his name to the better-known Nero Claudius Caesar. Agrippina was able to create prominence for Nero through the much used tactic patronage, which included the use of contacts and influence to make an objective. In Agrippinas case her son to start out emperor (Antiquity 2, 2008). These contacts, or clients, would assist the patrons by supporting and furthering the cause of the patron.Agrippinas clients were Seneca, one who she had recalled from exile, and Burrus who she had made bushel prefect, an ordeal which is seen in The Annals of imperial Rome written by Tacitus which states These two men were expected to do whatever Agrippina wanted, and were expected to aid in hers and her sons rise to power. There is much dispute over whether Agrippina was responsible for the death of Claudius, the more likely idea is that she did kill him as it is stated by both Tacitus and Dio Cassius. When this ordeal was ove r, Nero was claimed the new emperor and to Agrippinas delight was sculptured again in the Sebasteion of Aphrodisias with Nero by her side. During Neros reign Agrippina was offered even more advantages then when Claudius reigned. She become priestess of Claudius cult and was offered two lictors, who were men which carried around the official emblems of the public office and would clear a path for her wherever she went (Antiquity 2, 2008). However this did not match the coruscant amount of coins that were minted with the mother and son to display the familys power. In AD 69 the saddened occurrence of Agrippinas demise surfaced. It was apparent, although not to the wider area of Rome, that Nero was responsible for her death. It seems that Nero had braggart(a) tired of his mothers controlling ways and decided that the only way he would be rid of it was to kill her. Agrippina was an independent strong held woman in a time where females were down trodden. She was not afraid to test the s ystem and remained one of the most prominent women in the time of imperial Rome.
